Capitol Hill Clothiers Custom Overcoat Breakdown

There are near-infinite options for customizing an overcoat from Capitol Hill Clothiers. From high-quality angora or cashmere fabrics to a bold custom lining, the potential is huge! In this post, we’ll go through one of our client’s custom overcoats and why each design and customization choice was made.

The Overall Coat

This overcoat was made from a beautiful 580-gram fabric blended from angora rabbit and wool. This client wanted a versatile overcoat that could work in casual or professional settings. This hazelnut brown with a luscious texture was one of the first fabrics I laid out to satisfy this need and she loved it! It’s a satisfyingly thick fabric that works during the daytime or the evening, at any level of formality expected in her life, and in any climate. This is a women’s custom overcoat, so the front panels of the coat have been crafted specifically to accommodate the client’s bust and curves.

The Belted Back

Overcoats are meant to serve a variety of purposes and be worn over varying levels of layers. This coat features a belted back to cinch the waistline or let it out depending on how many layers the client wears underneath and how she wants the silhouette to look.

The Contrasts

There are loads of options for customizing the stitching on a jacket from Capitol Hill Clothiers. This allows a client can be as subtle or as bold as they want to be. In this instance, the client opted for subtle piping on the edges of the lining to create a color gradient between the darker brown coat fabric and the more busy lining fabric. She also chose a forest green contrast stitch on the last buttonhole of her functional sleeve cuffs. This option helps to show that a jacket is custom-made without being too loud about it. Other stitching options include a contrasting lapel buttonhole or contrasting button threads.

The Lining

There are so many options for the design that can be placed on a Capitol Hill Clothiers jacket lining. An avid reader, this client chose to feature a long list of her favorite books inside this jacket. Every Capitol Hill Clothiers lining is custom-designed for each client’s preference. The books are an assortment of colors, but the main colors complement the jacket fabric very well. She sent over a long list of books and each one is included in this bold lining.

The Stitching

There’s no harm in keeping things simple, and this coat is proof of that. This client put her name inside over the lining and chose a subtle picked stitch on the edge of the lapel. There are no limitations on what can be embroidered into a custom jacket, so if you’re thinking of scheduling a fitting, get creative and think of what you’d like your jacket to say about you - Literally!

The Lapels

This client wanted a feminine lapel that wasn’t too trendy or loud. Because of its intended use case in more casual to business casual environments, she selected a shawl lapel for this overcoat. The width was chosen to reflect the same use case. Not too wide and not too skinny. Just right!

The Buttons

Buttons for a custom overcoat have to be rugged and able to brave the elements. Because of this, springing for the extra quality is a smart move! This client opted for real bull horn buttons in brown to match the color theme of the overcoat and provide a natural matte-finished look to the details of the garment.
